To hide the brackets,īy doing as you are the brackets are being removed because you are removing the Bookmarks, themselves. With that Preference checked Bookmark brackets will display in documents regardless of whether non-printing characters is toggled on/off. Of Bookmarks is a separate Preference in Word> Preferences> View - Show in Document.

However, the display of Bookmarks is not controlled by the display of non-printing characters (¶) - at least not in Mac Word. Without seeing the document it's hard to be certain, but I agree with Charles that the brackets indicate Bookmarks.
